Over/Under 2.5 goals explained

Updated 14 October 2026 2 min read

Over/Under 2.5 goals is the most widely priced goals market in football. It ignores who wins and asks a single question: will the match have three goals or more?

What over and under 2.5 means

  • Over 2.5 wins if the match ends with 3 or more goals: 2-1, 3-0, 2-2 and so on.
  • Under 2.5 wins if there are 2 or fewer goals: 0-0, 1-0, 1-1, 2-0.

The half goal means there is no middle result: every match settles one way or the other. Only goals in the 90 minutes plus stoppage time count; extra time and penalties do not.

How often matches go over 2.5 goals

Across the last 298 finished matches in the archive, 61% went over 2.5 goals, with an average of 3.09 goals per match.

The rate varies by competition and season. Each league's statistics page shows its own figure, for example Premier League statistics and Bundesliga statistics.

Reading the prices

Convert the price into a probability by dividing 1 by it. Over 2.5 at 1.80 implies 1 ÷ 1.80 = 56%; under 2.5 at 2.05 implies 49%. The two add up to more than 100% because of the bookmaker's margin, explained in how to read decimal odds.

Between two attacking sides the over is often priced around 1.50; in a cautious match between defensive teams it can be above 2.20.

Other goal lines

  • Over/Under 1.5: over wins with 2+ goals.
  • Over/Under 3.5 and 4.5: for high-scoring matches.
  • First-half lines: only goals before half-time count.
  • Whole-number lines (2.0, 3.0): if the total equals the line, stakes are refunded. BetArchives marks these as a refund.
